Let us imagine that History ended long ago, that we live in a period prolonged by the liminal inertia of its end. In a layered reality, crucial phenomena are not always obvious. A lethal mutation in one layer need not be immediately perceived in another. A deadly rupture in one organ may give rise to a heightened sense of reality in another. Instantly, diagnoses become symptoms. Time’s slasticity may shift so that we dwell among ruins and yet feel at home.
